For maximum damage, shoot at the vertical center of the building or player; i.e. shoot at the health indicator.
This behaviour may change, but until then you'll want to direct your shots.

As of version 0.520, there is no longer a very significant advantage to shoot at the vertical center of a building.

Heh, I guess I'm prob one of the only ones that still shoots bots then I guess. On the way to enemy base, I always 2-3 shot all the bots I see. Your ammo regen's fast enough that you don't miss the shots and it helps your base defenses kill the bots before the bots kill your defenses.

Best place to aim for me has always been the base of the buildings...it still "hits" the building even if i miss and hit the ground close to it
